Liga de campeones

Fans of the king of sports in Spain are in luck. On February 15th Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will host Napoli in the first leg of the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Following a few months of rest, Europe is once again focusing its attention on Madrid. Everyone wants to see how the reigning champion of the UEFA Champions League will fair in its journey towards its 12th European cup.

The local Madrid team’s primary goal is to secure a solid win which will allow them to travel confidently to San Paolo Stadium in Naples on March 7. Cristiano Ronaldo will be in the spotlight in what is his favorite competition and which has given him a lot to celebrate both at the group and individual level. He currently holds the record for the most goals scored in the Champions League season with a total of 16.

This game is especially appealing for two soccer players who enjoyed Madrid’s hospitality for several years while they wore the white shirt. One is José Callejón, a player who came up through the ranks of Real Madrid’s system, and had success with the first team under the tutelage of the Portuguese coach José Mourinho and the other is Raúl Albiol, the center back who spent his best years as part of the Spanish national team while he played for the club currently coached by Zinedine Zidane.

This is the second time that these two European teams face-off in a Champions League qualifying round. The last time the two met in a qualifying round was in the first round of the 1987/88 season. The first game was played at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium behind closed doors and ended in victory for Madrid while the second leg ended in a tie.
