Patrimonio Flamenco, en la BNE

“Only mystery inspires passion in mankind: that which attracts him and that he does not understand; that which illuminates him and casts shadows over him; that which inspires him but at the same time fills him with sadnessAnd there are few things more mysterious than deep song“.

With these words from Antonio Gala we want to convey to you that flamenco is a Spanish style of music and dance which has transcended borders and has left its mark on the West, as well as the Far East. Nowadays it seems as though foreigners have a better grasp of the significance of flamenco and what it transmits than the Spanish people. We must never forget that it is part of our heritage and that we should be proud of its history, tradition and artistic beauty. That is why the National Library of Spain (Paseo de Recoletos, Madrid) has planned an exhibition to pay homage to this style of music native to Andalusia, Extremadura and Murcia.

The title of the exhibition is Patrimonio Flamenco: La historia de la cultura jonda [Flamenco Heritage: The history of deep song culture] and, as its very name indicates, it is a collection of around 150 works dedicated to exalt its origins, history and achievements, as well as to pay homage to the most important artists in flamenco history: La Niña de los Peines, Chacón, Carmen Amaya, Mairena, Caracol, Gades, Paco de Lucía, Camarón and Morente, among others.

The collection begins with the first pre-flamenco representations which can be found in works such as La Gitanilla by Cervantes or prints like El Vito by Goya, up to the latest films by Saura or street art with which Suso33 represents Enrique Morente today. You can visit Patrimonio Flamenco: La historia de la cultura jonda until May 2, 2017 free of charge in the Hipostilá room of the National Library in Madrid.
