When it comes to Spain, Madrid stands out because it always has magnificent expositions for us to visit. One such exhibit has been on display at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica since November 8th. It is entitled “Mars, the conquest of a dream” and, as the very title suggests, it addresses humankind’s fascination with the red planet since time immemorial.

The dream of exploring the red planet

The exhibit on Mars was co-produced by Valencia’s Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias and you can check it out at the Telefónica Foundation’s cultural facilities on Calle Fuencarral. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the interpretations of our neighboring planet over the years. Visitors will learn that civilizations as disparate as the Greeks and the Aztecs associated the planet with war and chaos.

After this first section on astronomy and history, you can view the 150 objects comprising this exhibit. You’ll find a fragment of the Mars meteorite which fell on Nigeria in 1962; a replica of the telescope created by Galileo Galilei; several illustrated books from the 16th and 17th centuries representing the first modern scientific take on the solar system and models of the main missions which have been sent to the red planet.

The exhibit ends with an interactive section where you can take photos with a replica of Curiosity (the rover sent to explore Mars). The exposition also provides information on the planet, including a series of best practices for how humans should behave in this new world.

This free exhibit will remain open until March 4, 2018. If you are passionate about space exploration, come to Madrid to see the exhibit and take a few days to enjoy the city.
