Los esbozos para óleo del maestro Rubens, en el Museo del Prado

There is a new exhibition this week in Madrid that pays homage to the great Flemish painter, Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Considered the most remarkable artist in the history of European art, this new exhibit seeks to offer depth and relevance to one of his most important facets, that of a sketch artist.

The Rubens collection

The collection contains 82 sketches, plus an additional 20 painting, as well as other works and drawings that help provide context to Rubens’ sketches. The exposition, which was inaugurated yesterday, will remain open until August 5, 2018 If you love art and you are planning a trip to Madrid during the spring or summer, it is a must see.

The exhibit is on display at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays opening hours are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. In addition, you can visit the museum free of charge from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sundays.

Oil sketching was used by some artists in the 16th century, but it was Rubens who converted this practice into an exceptional art form. He made his sketches mainly to record different ideas for future compositions, either as samples to present to his customers or as designs for book covers or because he wanted to remember a face that had caught his attention.

It is without a doubt an extraordinarily valuable collection. Although only a portion of his work is on display, a total of 500 pieces have been preserved from his artistic life in the city of Antwerp in Belgium. This exhibit in Madrid will strike a chord, artistically and emotionally.
