Ciencia e imprenta: viaje a los orígenes de uno de los grandes inventos de la Humanidad

The world as we know it would not exist without printing. Until May 27th you can visit an exhibit in Madrid containing some of the most important books from the birth of the printing process until the 18th century. The exhibit includes 35 books and various objects that take you through the history of the printing process and centuries-old science.

Ciencia e Imprenta (Science and Printing) is the first in a series of exhibits planned by Madrid’s Instituto de Cervantes to share the secrets contained in the libraries of the various Spanish academies with the general public. That is why for this exhibit all of the items and books have been lent by Madrid’s Real Academia de las Ciencias which has 27,000 volumes and more than 5,000 periodical publications, maps and manuscripts.

It’s an interesting opportunity to better understand the scientific thinking of the time and to see the marvels of printing that dates back hundreds of years. The exhibit was created as a “bibliographic study”. Mainly books are on display, although there are also portraits, one of Quevedo’s calculators and the Nobel Prize diploma granted to Echegaray.

Entry is completely free and this exhibit on science and printing is appropriate for everyone. It’s being held at Madrid’s Instituto Cervantes, a place of symbolic importance for science and literature.
