The feminine seams of Spanish fashion

At the National Museum of Decorative Arts, and until March 31, 2019, you can enjoy the exhibition Women’s Seams in Spanish Fashion 1930 – 2018. This exhibition is the result of collaboration between the Museum, the EFE Agency and the Association of Fashion Creators in Spain (ACME) and seeks to represent the evolution of Spanish women from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.

The exhibition consists of 80 photographs that portray how, throughout these nine decades, fashion has been an expression of evolution, security and decision that has reflected women’s personality in Spain, their freedom, growth and empowerment within society.

The images on display lack the typical filters of fashion photography. Thus, each photograph seeks to expose women as subjects in full exercise of their professional activity. Contemporary Spanish designers such as Manuel Piña, Jesús del Pozo, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Sybilla, David Delfín and Adolfo Domínguez share the spotlight.

Through journalists’ eyes, we see how feminine revolution is fully expressed through fashion. Large shawls and covered bodies give rise to revealing garments, while other pieces such as lace reveal mastery and accompany women in all kinds of acts throughout the decades.

The National Museum of Decorative Arts is located at 12 Montalbán Street, very close to Puerta de Alcalá and El Retiro Park (Retiro Station on Metro Line 2). Entrance to the exhibition is free until full capacity is reached, and the museum can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Thursday afternoons from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
