San Isidro

Everyone knows Madrid is a unique city, however on the Feast of Saint Isidore the Farmer, it shines even brighter. How can you make your Feast of Saint Isidore the Farmer (or simply, San Isidro, as it is referred to in Spain) spectacular? Pay close attention if you decide to visit Madrid on May 15th.

To begin your day and before it gets too hot, how about a stroll through the center of Madrid where our hotel is located? Giants and big-headed behemoths will be parading through the streets threatening anyone who approaches from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol or the Plaza de Callao. This is how you start your day off on the right foot!

According to tradition, Saint Isidore the Farmer hit a rock with his stick causing water to flow from it. Today, the Ermita de San Isidro stands at the very same spot and men and women in traditional dress, known as chulapos and chulapas, come here before heading to Pradera de San Isidro park. Locals typically go to the park around midday to eat and have an afternoon snack: anything from cocido madrileño, Madrid’s renown stew, to a fantastic Spanish tortilla. If you wake up and you’re not in the mood to cook, don’t worry. There are dozens of stands selling pork and lamb offal and the famous Madrid-style donuts, rosquillas, which come in a range of flavors (tontas, listas, Santa Clara and del santo).

When night falls, concerts are held in the park. Fabulous musicians will get you on your feet and singing along until you’re all worn out. And when the day seems to have drawn to a close, there will be fireworks, which everyone loves, alongside the moonlight.  Grab a great spot so you can enjoy them in all of their splendor! You still want more? The perfect plan to end the day is to head to our café for a Madrid specialty, a plate of churros and a mug of chocolate. What more can you ask of Saint Isidore than a day like that?
