Exposición de Chagall a Malévich en Fundación MAPFRE

The Grimaldi Forum of Monaco and the MAPFRE Foundation organized an exhibition called from Chagall to Malévich: Art in Revolution. This exhibition pays tribute to these modern artists from Russia who experienced first hand the revolution of October 1917.

The exhibition is aimed at showing the revolution that Russia underwent at the beginning of the 20th century, as it was considered one of the world’s artistic centers. The commissioner, Jean-Louis Prat, chose Marc Chagall and Kazmir Malévich as the two main artists as they express two opposing points of what was the artistic history of that period.

On the one hand, Chagall opened the way to surrealism thanks to his narrative and poetic vision, strongly inspired by life in Belarus, biblical themes and numerous events of his childhood. Malévich, on the other hand, stands out for his avant-garde use of geometric themes that, to a large extent, define some of his most important works. These expose what Malévich called Suprematism in which the pictorial elements are reduced to the maximum to give priority to geometric abstractions as central elements in the canvas.

This exhibition promises to show us a window into how artistic expressions evolved in the height of Russian communism, as well as the way in which painters related to the political ideologies and different artistic movements of the time.

With more than 90 works and 24 publications, this exhibition promises to give a walk through the beginnings of modern art and a brushstroke of history told through the eyes of artists such as Popova, El Lisitski, Kandinsky, Rodchenko, and Matiushin, among others. The exhibition will be available until the 5th of May at Paseo de Recoletos 23, Monday from 14:00-20:00h; Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00-20:00h and Sundays and Holidays from 11:00-19:00h.
