Madrid is a city with a wide range of museums: it has more than 40 museums for every occasion. In addition to this great variety, like so many other great cities in Europe, it offers a painters’ square to enjoy local art outdoors. Taller Abierto, the Madrid painters’ cultural association, holds a collective exhibition of uncovered paintings every Sunday at the Plaza del Conde de Barajas.  Since 1984, this space was granted by the Municipal Board of Madrid Centre for more than a dozen artists to display and sell their works of art.

The so-called Painters’ Market has become one of the main open-air showcases for the city’s great artistic and cultural talent. It was created mainly so that people had the opportunity to observe in the same place the different painting techniques and could also clarify their doubts directly with the artists.

A maximum of 40 artists have been chosen to exhibit their works and those interested in participating should sign up for a long waiting list. The Painters’ Market not only offers the possibility of admiring all kinds of fine art, but also has various cultural activities open for the public. There are painting contests, activities for children interested in painting and art, as well as thematic exhibitions. For example, the exhibition always tries to add to the great events that take place in the city, such as Carnival, Christmas, Gay Pride, and so on.

This art exhibition can be visited free of charge and is very close to the Puerta del Sol. It can be enjoyed every Sunday from 10-14hrs in the Plaza del Conde de Barajas, better known as the Plaza de los Pintores.
