Final stage of the Vuelta ends in Madrid
In mid-September, Madrid once again has the honour of hosting the final stage of the Vuelta a España which, in 2019, celebrates its 74th anniversary in its LXXIV edition.
The Spanish Vuelta, or as it is more popularly known, “La Vuelta”, is the youngest of those known as ” Big Tours” together with the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. This emblematic competition, which had its first edition in 1937, consists of 21 stages in which cyclists will cover a total of 3,272.2 km.
The route is divided into 6 flat stages, 4 hill stages, 9 mountain stages, 1 individual stage against the clock, a team stage against the clock and only 2 days of rest. The Vuelta began its first stage on August 24 in an explosive way with a time trial by teams of 18 km from Salinas de Torrevieja to Torrevieja.
Stage 21 will mark the end of the Vuelta on September 15th and will be a flat route from Fuenlabrada to Madrid, with a distance of 105.6 km. The brave winner of this tough competition will receive the red jersey, or “La Roja”, which celebrates its 10th anniversary.
The final stage of the lap usually passes through Paseo de La Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos and Plaza de La Cibeles for an exciting and emotional finish.
