This autumn, Madrid’s artistic programme is exponentially enriched by the Brueghel exhibition the Wonders of flamenco art in the Gaviria palace. It is a unique opportunity to get to know some of the most influential works of European art between the 16th and 17th centuries.

After touring several cities in Japan, where it was a resounding success, and other capitals such as Rome, Paris or Tel Aviv, it finally arrives in Madrid as the sixth exhibition of the Palace. Approximately a hundred pieces make up the tour of the exhibition of the most influential members of this lineage of painters. Among them are works by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Jan Peter Brueghel, Abraham Brueghel and Ambrosius Brueghel. The exhibition, curated by Sergio Gaddi, is also intended to give us a retrospective view of the pictorial art of the time with some representative pieces by artists such as Rubens, Bosch and David Teniers the Younger.

The tour of the pieces will begin with the first of the family tree among them: Pieter Brueghel the Elder, followed by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, who made copies of the same paintings as his father, that reflected human vices.

Then, Jan Brueghel the Younger, son Pieter Brueghel the Elder, achieved success by selling his father’s paintings. From his sons, we can observe works by Jan Peter Brueghel, who dedicated himself to the floral genre, and the landscape painter Abraham Brueghel. Among the most surprising works in the exhibition are Pareja de bodegones con flores, and a cycle of four paintings representing Ambrosius Brueghel’s Alegoría de los elementos: tierra, fuego, agua y aire (Allegory of the Elements: Earth, Fire, Water and Air).

You can attend the exhibition on Monday-Friday from 11 am to 9 pm as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 9 pm at the Palace of Gaviria, just a few steps from our hotel on Arenal Street. The general ticket will cost 14€ with audio guide included.
