Txomin Badiola en el Retiro

February will be the last month to enjoy a free exhibition of the work of sculptor and Bilbao native, Txomin Badiola, at the Velázquez Palace, one of the most beautiful buildings in Madrid’s Retiro Park. The collection, entitled Otro Family Plot, is a retrospective created to harmonize with the Velázquez Palace, the preparation of which demonstrates the duality of construction and critical deconstruction characteristic of all of Badiola’s work.

The exhibition was ultimately structured into eight major areas or sections. Desiring shapes, bastards and the unsatisfied; Survive among signs. Being a sign; An I image. The unavoidable otherness. Everything is vanity; Public Necessities/Private Passions; The group, the band and the commando; Avatars of shape; Spaces, bodies and language; and The phrase-image-thing. The relationship established between these areas is not chronological, since it presents works from various periods simultaneously, giving rise to meta-comments and leaps in time in the form of flashbacks and flash forwards which evoke forgotten origins or point towards unexplored pathways of development.

Txomin Badiola, born in Bilbao in 1957, understands artwork as an expression of a conflict between discourses, shapes, feelings, signs and references, and takes a permanent critical stance towards the possibilities of making art. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía organized this exhibition, commissioned by João Fernandes, which will close on Thursday, February 26th.

The Velázquez Palace is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in the winter and the entry point closest to the exhibition hall is via the Ibiza metro station.
