If you are looking for a unique, different and fun excursion in Madrid you will love the Strawberry Train, a trip which will take you back 150 years. What? You’ve never heard of it? We’ll tell you all about it in this post.
The Strawberry Train — the name comes from the strawberries passed out during the ride by the attendants dressed in period costume — will take you on an excursion to Aranjuez, one of the most beautiful cities in all of Spain, in a train with a long history. The train retraces the first trip made by the first train from Madrid and the second on the entire peninsula. Inaugurated in 1851 by Queen Isabella II, it is a symbol of Spanish industrialization.
The idea was hatched in 1984 by the community of Madrid and other organizations and continues to be a success every year from April to October. The train leaves from the Príncipe Pío station at 9:50 a.m. and arrives at the Aranjuez station at 10:44 a.m. It returns from the same station at 6:55 p.m. and arrives at 7:48 p.m.
